Whew - a wee bit busy

6:45 a.m. - Unplanned scanning scheduled for our school by the Office of School Safety. 15-20 security officers set up full scanning stations. Every school gets an unplanned scanning exercise. It's just McKee's turn today. As an administrator, I can't say anything about it to students or staff. The goal is to make sure students are safe and secure and are abiding by NYCDOE rules.

7 a.m. - I see 7 of the students bring their luggage up the block to the scanning entrance. 22 more students for a total of 29 students will be bringing their luggage to the student entrance in preparation for a 3 day overnight trip to the New York State SkillsUSA Competition in Syracuse, New York.  The Assistant Principal of Security has already worked out with the deans and the security from Central Office that the students, after being scanned, will bring their belongings into the auditorium.

7:05 a.m. - The first bus has arrived for the first trip - the SkillsUSA competition.

7:30 - Teachers, paraprofessionals and staff are entering. One of the chaperones is at the main door making sure that all the students know which way to go after they have been scanned.

8:00 a.m. - Teacher team meetings are starting.

8:15 a.m. - Chaperones from the first trip are checking attendance.

8:20 a.m. - Two officers from SkillsUSA are double checking that no one has left their equipment or supplies. A third officer pops into the office to say that all students are present. "The equipment is packed. Everyone's here. Let's go." As I take a sip of Starbucks, I wonder if students ever hear that they can sound very authoritative - as in crack the whip authoritative - in gathering together to accomplish a task.

8:25 a.m. - Chaperones from the second trip are checking to make sure whether they should 'bring the iPad with speakers or the laptop with speakers - oh heck - bring both' - to show the video clip.

8:27 a.m. - The morning attendance coordinator says, "Ms. Henry" to remind me that I need to turn in my sub lesson ( I teach one class of freshmen 3rd period) before I attend the conference.

8:30 - The 2nd bus has arrived for the 2nd trip. 30 students will participate in the SIEDC conference. They will rotate being at the vendor table. The students look crisp in black and white. The chaperones lead them onto the bus. Chaperones check attendance.

8:35 a.m. - First bus with 29 students, and 3 chaperones, departs on the SKillsUSA trip.

8:40 a.m. - Second bus departs with 30 students to the SIEDC Conference.

8:45 a.m. - Turn in my substitute lesson.  Head towards my car to attend 1.5 hours of the SIEDC conference and see how the students conduct themselves.

Just thought I'd share 2 hours of today.
