The FAFSA workshop at McKee happened on Saturday, January 12, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The topics presented ranged from types of scholarships, grants, and loans along with the key information needed to fill out the FAFSA application. Click here for the site to the FAFSA application. The workshop was due to the hard work of Ms. Jennifer Miller, our guidance counselor linking up with Ms. Sheryl Price our New York Urban League Staten Island Coordinator and School Liaison, and Ms. Alice Colman. The refreshments were courtesy of the McKee PTA.

The first presenter was Ms. Alice Colman (left) from the New York Urban League (NYUL) that spoke about all the different ways to "motivate" (read nag, push, hover, encourage, and strongly guide students) to get prepared for college.

The audience was composed of both parents and students from all grade levels. There were resource packets handed and copious notes taken. I must say it was quite fun to see two 9th grade students and his parents from my Pathway to AVID class attend the workshop.
Jennifer Miller (left), guidance counselor, is smiling broadly at the lovely turnout. The serious gentleman is Mr. Mark Beyer, the McKee PTA president.

The audience also learned about three scholarships on the NYUL website that are available. The Ann S. Kheel Scholarship, the Con Edison Scholarship and the Whitney M. Young Scholarship. Click here to find out more information.
Ms. Sheryl Price provided details about how to access the Whitney M. Young scholarship which is open to all seniors. In addition she advised the audience about the New York Urban League Saturday workshops that occur in Manhattan. There was a fountain of information presented which parents and students were advised to click on the McKee website, and NYUL website.

It's good to be a "helicopter parent." We at McKee High School support "hovering." We hope to have another workshop on further information about financial aid in the near future.
